We’re excited to share that the Good Shepherd Ministry now includes a Parish Nurse, Catherine Heffley, RN. Below is some helpful information on how you or a loved one might benefit from this.
What is the role of a Parish Nurse?
Parish nursing is all about health promotion and disease prevention. The parish nurse considers the care of the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. She is a Registered Nurse who has specialized training and performs these functions:
- Health counselor
- Educator and trainer
- Referral agent
- Health advocate
- Liaison with community services
- Integrator of faith and health
- Collaborator with the Pastor, Deacon, and other Lay Ministers
Services of a Parish Nurse can include:
- Screenings, such as blood pressure
- Classes on health-related issues
- Home and nursing home visits
- Taking communion to shut-ins; praying with them
- Referrals to appropriate church and community resources
- Health tips via church bulletin and electronically
- Support for caretakers
Some things a Parish Nurse does NOT do:
- Give medications
- Give treatments or wound care
- Provide in-home medical care
- Make diagnoses
What is the background of Sts. Peter and Paul’s Parish Nurse, Catherine Heffley?
Catherine has been a registered nurse for over 50 years. She began her career in 1969 as an Army nurse and retired as a school nurse in 2014. She has volunteered as a parish nurse in other parishes for about 25 years. She is originally from Huron, Ohio, graduating from St. John College, Cleveland, VCU/MCV, and Bon Secours Faith Community Nurse Program. She is married, has four adult children, and two grandchildren. Catherine has a passion for meeting people at the intersection of faith and health.
