News Blast & Bulletin 03/06/2022

1st Sunday of Lent

Greetings:

Your bulletin: https://saintspeterpaulpalmyra.org/march-6th-2022/

Here are the highlights:

  • Lenten Lunches continue thru Friday, April 8th. Immediately after the Stations of the Cross we offer a simple Lenten Lunch of a bowl of soup and a sandwich. We need volunteers to provide a crockpot of soup or a plate of sandwiches. Please find the sign-up sheet on the kitchen door in the Commons to let us know what you will bring. (p. 8)
  • Lenten ‘Spare Change’ cans are available in the entrance hallway. This year the drive is focused on Debt Reduction. As you give up something for Lent, please consider donating the cost of what you gave up to the church for debt reduction. If you break a bill as you are paying for something, consider putting that change in the can. If you save money on the purchase of an item by buying a generic version, please consider putting that savings in the can. Let your Faith be your guide in your Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.
  • Also available on the Can table are Lenten reflections books (supplies are limited).
  • The next Bake Sale is this weekend.
  • Calling all prayer warriors: there is a Spring 40 Days for Life event beginning on March 8th – April 5th (Tuesdays) that you can participate in located in front of Planned Parenthood. If you’d like to carpool with others, meet at the Jefferson Pharmacy parking lot on Tuesday mornings at 8:30am. (p. 9)
  • A NEW Health Ministry is forming at our church. If you have had training in any medical field, and would like to be part of this volunteer ministry, please contact Catherine Heffley, RN, Faith Community Nurse. (p.5) (Contact: 757.813.1992 or [email protected])
  • Help wanted: A new chairperson is needed to head the annual fundraising event. Contact Jim Cullinan with questions. (p. 7)
  • Only 18 appointments remain for our directory. If you had your photo taken 2 years ago, please make a new appointment. We have a different company from the last time. You can make your appointment at church or you can click on the link below and make your appointment on-line. (If you are the head of a ministry or an employee, please make sure you schedule an appointment.) Link: https://instant-scheduling.com/sch.php?kn=3534502&typId=63981&step=2. Sign-up weekends are ongoing through March 13th, if you need assistance in this process. This will be available before and after Masses in the Commons. (p. 9)
  • Let Buildings & Grounds make use of those planters and pots that are collecting in the corner of your garage. (p. 9)
  • Synod meetings continue: The final meeting is tomorrow, Saturday, March 5th @ 10am. Your input is very important.
  • Fish Fry-Days continue through April 8th. If you are able to help during any or all the dates please contact Doug Mullinex at [email protected]. (p. 8)
  • Liturgy of the Hours returns for Lent. Tune in to our Facebook page at 9am on Saturdays and Mondays during Lent. First one is tomorrow. Thank you Deacon Bob and Susan.
  • There is a soon-to-be former parishioner moving away from the Lake, looking for someone to do “one-time, exit house cleaning”, preferably to be done on Saturday, March 12th. If interested, contact Pat Coldeway at 979.268.9312.
  • If you are in either building after normal business hours, please, please, please, be sure to:
    • NOT prop doors open (we cannot afford to heat/cool the outside).
    • turn lights off (even if you didn’t turn them on)
    • return the thermostat to its original setting (if you adjusted it)
    • turn off/unplug the portable heater (chapel users only)
    • turn around and make sure the outermost doors have completely closed behind you. (Yank on the door to make sure it doesn’t open.) There has been more than one occasion where these doors have been found to be not securely shut all the way.
    • Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
  • Don’t forget . . . St. Joseph’s is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner tomorrow, Saturday, March 5th at 6:30p in the Parish Hall. All donations will be used for an Eagle Scout project to beautify the Shrine of St. Katharine Drexel. Parishioners from both parishes are invited.
  • St. Joseph’s needs volunteers for counting the collection after Mass and providing refreshments and clean-up after fellowship on Sundays after Mass. If you have a child in CCD, these are great activities to keep you busy until they are through. See Pat Morse if you can help. (p. 10 & 11)
  • Lenten ‘Spare Change’ cans are available. This year the drive is focused on the Maintenance and Repair needs of St. Joseph. As you give up something for Lent, please consider donating the cost of what you gave up to the church for debt reduction. If you break a bill as you are paying for something, consider putting that change in the can. If you save money on the purchase of an item by buying a generic version, please consider putting that savings in the can. Lenten Reflections books are also available (supplies are limited).
  • The Fluvanna Christian Service Society (FCSS) is looking for a new Director. If you have the desire to serve please contact Gladys Albright at [email protected] for information.

Today’s Lenten reflection – “The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.” (Matthew 9:15b)
